Safeguard Gets Rid of Bees.

Safeguard has been getting rid of bees and wasps, and making happy customers for over 20 years. We have thousands of local fans and the very highest ranking on referral sites, such as Angie's List.

Safety first.

This page will touch on bees, bee control, and bee removal.

For dedicated 'do it yourselfers' - we have included safety notes.  We wear safety gear when getting rid of bees and use non-repellent control materials whenever possible, to keep ourselves and others from getting stung.  A large percentage of our calls every year are from customers who got stung repeatedly while trying to get rid of bees themselves.

Non-repellent control materials to get rid of bees are not licensed for homeowners and cannot be purchased at your local hardware store, but are essential for safe bee removal.

Getting rid bees - note:

Yellow Jackets are small, compact wasps that are commonly mistaken for bees. 99% of our calls to get rid of bees are actually calls for us to get rid of Yellow Jackets.

Yellow Jackets nest in the following areas:  In walls, in attics, in sub area crawlspaces, in the ground, in trees, and under eaves.

There are several types of local bees that can infest homes and landscaping.

mbee Mason bees or orchard bees are vital local pollinators that are increasingly important due to setbacks to the honey bee. They may be bluish or greenish and often nest in cracks around doors and windows, and especially in the gaps between cedar shingles when hey are used as siding. They rarely ever sting and do not harm your home. We will spray if you ask us to , but recommend against it.

swbee Sweat bees are also increasingly common and vital. They nest in exposed soil. Like the mason bees, they have small cells with very few bees, but multiple nests may occur in a general area. These are also non-aggressive, and won't sting unless you step on them.

Bumble bees can be quite scary and very loud. They are large and mainly black. They can nest in leaf debris and occasionally in attics (where the loud buzzing can upset even the most stolid customers. When we spray these bees, we do try to remove the nests if possible, but you may need to replace drywall or seal it to prevent future bees from being attracted to the honey they produce. They don't produce much - but is a huge draw for future problems.

Honey Bees

bee1Honey bees are very rare in or on homes. For years we tried in vain to get bee keepers to come out and remove the one or two actual honey bee infestations we saw. Most bee keepers flatly refused. Most of the time when they come out to a house they find yellow jackets too. Bee keepers are not licensed pest control operators, no license, no liability insurance, and they have no use for yellow jackets.

If we find honey bees at a home we will try to find a bee keeper for you - but cannot guarantee that we can.

If you really do have honey bees, again, very rare, you will need to open up the area where they were nesting after they are gone to remove any traces of honey. Otherwise, the bees will be back, time and again.

A few words about bee and wasp control products.

Caution: all over the counter sprays for wasp and bee control are highly repellent - that is they make the bees or wasps very agitated. This increases your chances of being stung.  If you perform bee or wasp control - only do so at night and do not shine a light on the nest - they will follow back on the light beam and attack you.

Also note that all cans of 'wasp freeze' or 'wasp jet', etc... contain petroleum distillates - which means that they will permanently stain siding and other surfaces, they will kill plants, and they will absorb immediately into your exposed skin, or heaven forbid, your eyes.  Always wear full face and eye protection.

We exterminate bees and wasps using no odor, no fume, non-repellent water based sprays that don't stain and don't agitate bees or wasps.  We recommend leaving the large social wasp or honey bee nests up for a few days to kill any foraging bees or wasps that were not present when the nest was sprayed. Yellow jackets and Honey bee nest removal can confuse and agitate returning bees and wasps, and they will live for days with nothing but stinging you on their minds. If you would like us to return later and remove yellow jacket nests - we would be happy to schedule a follow up.

Yellow Jacket nest under eave - notice the complete paper enclosure. Bees do not make paper enclosures.

Getting rid of bee and wasp nests that are hidden.

Some species of bees and wasps prefer to nest in places that are more protected from their predators.  These species will nest in your roof, in your walls, or in the ground.

We get a large number of bee and wasp control requests every year from people who saw activity, couldn't see the nest, and treated the area where they went in and out to try and get rid of bees or wasps- only to have them chew their way in through the sheet rock or make new entry ways to their nests.  Having an entire nest of bees or wasps burst into your home through a new hole in your sheet rock is enough to get anyone's attention - especially since they consider anything in the home as a threat and will sting anyone they encounter.

For bee control on hidden nests or inaccessible nests - We treat the entry / exit areas with non-repellent bee control materials that the bees can't sense.  As they go in and out they transfer the material back into their nest exterminating bees inside, killing off the other workers, drones, larvae, and queen.

We do not recommend that homeowners try to get rid of bees when they cannot see the actual nest.

Getting rid of bees and wasps and maintaining control.

We offer a quarterly control service where we spray eaves, overhangs, vents, and other areas to cut down on spiders - the wasp's favorite food. This helps to prevent wasps and spiders, and together with a repellent spray, helps maintain bee and wasp control.

We would be happy to treat your entire home for bee and wasp control and prevention, in addition to eliminating any live bee or wasp nests you have now.  We have lots of satisfied customers on periodic pest control programs.
